WRITTEN TYCOON
Written Tycoon won his 9th Victorian Sire title, with another outstanding season across both Australia and NZ
Written Tycoon foaled 6 September 2002 is Stakes winning Australian Thoroughbred racehorse and successful sire who has sired multiple Group 1 winners. Written Tycoon is by the sire Iglesia (Last Tycoon) out of the mare, Party Miss (Kenmare FR) and was trained by Graham Begg over a short racing career, before being sent to the stud barn. The late Iglesia, who won six from 22 starts was an inexpensive and useful source of speed, but hardly a prolific sire of sires. Written Tycoon commenced his race career as a two-year-old with an easy win at Randwick as a pronounced 7/4 favourite. Two weeks later, he was narrowly beaten by filly Fashions Afield at Randwick. Fashions Afield would later frank the form in claiming the Sires' Produce Stakes and Reisling Stakes. Written Tycoon then recorded his only other career victory when winning the Gr.2 Todman Slipper Trials Stakes at Rosehill. In August 2005 Written Tycoon would finish 2nd in the Gr.3 San Domenico Stakes with Shane Dye aboard before another 2nd in the Listed Canterbury Classic in early 2006.
Written Tycoon was retired as a four-year old in March 2007 after finishing unplaced in the Challenge Stakes. At the end of his racing career he was sold by Inglis for A$625,000 to become a stallion - public auctions being an unusual route into a commercial breeding career. The stallion initially stood at Eliza Park Stud in Victoria, Australia for a service fee of A$6,600. In 2013 he was relocated to Woodside Park Stud for a fee of $13,750. By 2018 his service fee had increased to $110,000. In 2020 it was announced that Written Tycoon would be relocated to Arrowfield Stud in New South Wales. The crossover with the Danehill broodmare bloodlines proved an exceptionally effective pedigree. Written Tycoon drew closer to claiming his ninth Victorian Champion Sire title, with another outstanding season across both Australia and New Zealand.
Australia’s Leading First-Season Sire in 2010/11, and Leading Sire of Two-Year-Olds in 2015/16 and again in 2023/2024, many of the sons of the former Australian Champion Sire are now forging their own careers at stud, including Leading First-Season Sire Capitalist, Rich Enuff, Winning Rupert, Written By and Ole Kirk. Written Tycoon was the first sire since Redoute’s Choice and Danehill in the last 25 years to sire two colts to win the two richest Gr.1 two-year-old features in Australia. Capitalist took out the 2016 Golden Slipper Stakes, while Written By claimed victory in the 2018 Blue Diamond Stakes. Written Tycoon also sired the brlliant Coolangatta, Pippie, Tyzone, Tycoon Tara, Music Magnate, Luna Rossa Booker and Odeum. In 2024 Lady Of Camelot won the Golden Slipper, Velocious the Karaka Millions 3yo and Southport Tycoon took our the Australian Guineas. Yearlings sold up to $1.4 million in 2023.
