VEYRON
He was long, burly and immensely powerful, and Veyron showed it on the racetrack
Veyron is by Thorn Park out of Over The Limit a Centro mare out of the Brisbane Cup winning mare Limitless (Sir Tristram - Coverless), who also left the stakes winners Twinkling and Zero Limit. Their sister, Nothing Less is the dam of the multiple stakes winner Boundless and the stakes performers Nothing Lika Tango, Purrfection and Our Dance. Limitless and her half sister Run For Cover a stakes winner of five races was trained by her father, Royce Dowling. As a foal he was huge foal and very long, it was a difficult foaling and unfortunately Over The Limit hemorrhaged and died shortly afterwards. Named after the Bugatti Veyron, the world's fastest supercar, he did possess some real geniune horsespower, and a fair amount of torque. Veyron is the splitting image of his mother, only bigger, and he is so long he literally struggled to fit in the starting gates. Ms. Linda Laing, the trainer, demonstrated exceptional expertise in handling Veyron's unique challenges. Despite his proneness to accidents, which delayed his racing debut until the age of four, Veyron fortunately sustained no career-threatening injuries, although his legs bear significant scars from past incidents. Linda got to the stage where she was too scared to leave him in a box overnight and would put him in the paddock triple rugged.
He was very good early on in his racing career, winning his first start at Te Aroha on a heavy track over 1200m in October, 2009. This was off the back of three straight trial wins to prepare. After some minor placings he won a Rating 80 1400m race at Ellerslie in November, followed by a convincing Rating 90 win on the same course a month later. Veyron then failed in the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile on New Years Day 2011, before going for a spell. He returned winning at Auckland over 1200m in March, before another strong win over 1400m at Te Aroha in April of that year. A week later Veyron won his first Group one in the Easter Handicap (1600m) at Ellerslie, kicking clear of Fears Nothing and Sir Slick by three lengths. The horse then received a well earned rest until November 2011.
Returning late in the year Veyron finished 4th in a Listed event at Te Rapa before winning the Gr.3 Eagle Technology Stakes (1600m) in a big, strong effort back on his favoured course. He followed that up with another dominant win in an Open Handicap over the mile at Waikato, before putting in a massive effort to run 2nd to Shez Sinsational in the WFA Gr.1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) on Boxing Day 2011. Back to middle distance in February 2012 after a let up, Veyron claimed his second Group one victory in the WFA Waikato Draught Sprint (1400m) in fine style, edging away from the very classy Mufhasa by 3/4 of a length. In March Veyron franked that form with his 3rd Group one in the WFA Haunui Farm Classic (1600m) at Otaki, beating home Lady Kipling by a length. A 2nd placing followed in the Gr.1 WFA New Zealand Stakes (2000m), going down a neck to Scarlett Lady. In April Veyron took out the Gr.1 Easter Handicap (1600m), and despite being crowded, managed to power home strongly for his 4th Group one.
Veyron returned in the Autumn with a 3rd in the WFA Lion Red Plate (1200m) at Rotorua, however he raced three wide and suffered apprasions after being struck on the eye by a loose whip. A 2nd followed in November in the Gr.3 Tauranga Stakes (1600m) behind Zennista, but a poor 5th on a soft track at Trentham in the Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes was disappointing, although he was three wide without cover to the turn. A fine run of form running among the best saw Veyron win the Gr.1 Zabeel Classic on Boxing Day 2012 over Shez Sinsational, followed by a 2nd to Nashville in the Haunui Farm Classic in February 2013 after losing a plate, and another 2nd to the brilliant Ocean Park in the New Zealand Stakes when running wide for much of the trip.
Veyron then crossed the Tasman in April to contest the Gr.1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m), but was well beaten into 8th at Rosehill on a soft track. The race was won by Pierro, with (King) Mufhasa a long neck away in 2nd. The trainer claimed, Australia didn't get to see the best of him in the autumn, and after the George Ryder the horse sustained a foot injury and they flew him home.
Returning in July, the team still had aspirations for Australia and ran Veyron in an Open Handicap at Whangarei, where the horse ran three wide, laid in badly and failed to be ridden out. It wasn't ideal, however Veyron returned to Sydney in August to take on the Gr.2 Warrick Stakes (now the Winx) at Warwick Farm over 1400m. On a good track he won the event ridden by Christian Reith, beating home Streama and Rain Affair. Regular jockey, Rogan Norvall was unable to travel because of issues with his work visa. Veyron was at 20/1 and was not given much of a chance by Aussie scribes or punters. He then ran 9th in the Chelmsford before a nice 3rd in the Gr.1 George Main Stakes (1600m), but sadly ran last in the Gr.1 Epsom in Oct of that year. Back home his form deserted him until Nov 2014 when Veyron ran 2nd in the Eagle Technology Stakes at Ellerslie. Two more runs followed with a 4th and a 5th placing before Veyron was retired in Dec of 2014. Always turned out in faultless physical condition, Veyron completed a majestic career over the middle distance with black type stakes wins and a Group win in NSW. Veyron had an outstanding record in NZ, where he won 14 of his 29 starts, five at Group 1 level.
