THE CHOSEN ONE

He was a rock solid New Zealand stayer that faced the biggest stars and races in Australia

The Chosen One is a thoroughbred horse born in New Zealand in 2015. The Chosen One is by Savabeel (AUS) out of The Glitzy One (Flying Spur). Bred by the Dennis Brothers, The Chosen One, being out of a multiple race winning and five-times stakes performed mare The Glitzy One, is from a family they have cultivated for generations, that includes Champion Filly The Jewel and Group One winners La Diosa and The Perfect Pink. He was trained by Andrew Forsman in Cambridge, New Zealand. A Group One winner over a mile, and a multiple Group race winner on both sides of the Tasman earning over $2.7 million in stakes, from 1400m - 2400m, The Chosen One raced in very strong company in Australia and always performed consistently.  He was an honest performer, very sound and physically an athletic horse.

The Chosen One won his first race at Waverley, a maiden over 1400m on the 4th October 2018. He then backed that up by winning the Listed 3YO Zainto Stakes (1600m) at Riccarton in dominant style. He failed to fire in the NZ Guineas and Gr.1 NZ Derby in 2019 but won the Gr.3 Manawatu Classic (2000m) in March before attacking the Gr.1 ATC Derby (2400m) at Randwick on a soft track, running a creditable 4th just over 3L behind Angel Of Truth. Staying in Sydney, The Chosen One took out the Gr.3 Packer Plate (2000m), beating Dealmaker before a short break back home. After a couple local trials, Forsman returned with the horse to Melbourne in the spring, running 5th in the Feehan, then 9th in the Underwood. In October, The Chosen One was victorious in the Gr.2 Herbert Power (2400m) at Caulfield, proving the gelding had developed into a true, quality stayer. Unfortunately he failed in the Caulfield Cup, ran 5th in the Hotham Hcp and was quite dismal in the 2019 Melbourne Cup on an unsuitable soft surface.

The Chosen One returned in February back home, running 3rd in the Gr.1 WFA Haunui Classic (1600m) at Te Rapa, going down to the brilliant Avantage. He then returned to Sydney with three average runs, but was well hardened for the 2020 Sydney Cup (3200m), beaten only a long head by Etah James. He travelled back to Melbourne in September and won a 1700m Handicap, was 3rd behind Verry Elleegant in the Caulfield Cup and ran a powerful two miles for 4th in the 2020 Melbourne Cup behind Twilight Payment. In February the gelding ran 2nd in the Gr.1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) but his next Sydney sojourn was unsuccessful.

Spring back in Melbourne was far more fruitful, with a 3rd in the Gr.2 Feehan (1600m), 4th in the Group One Underwood (1800m) behind Zaaki and Probabeel and 2nd in the Gr.2 Herbert Power, beaten a length by Delphi. The Caulfield Cup was a failure, striking a soft track again, but he finished only 4L away in Verry Elleegant's brlliant 2021 Melbourne Cup win. In late January back in New Zealand, The Chosen One finally scored his first and only Group one win in the Thorndon Mile at Trentham. He followed up with a 3rd in the Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) and a 3rd in the Gr.1 Bonecrusher Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie in March 2022, beaten both times by Coventina Bay. A final trip to Australia saw a 3rd in the Gr.1 Tancred Stakes (2400m), a failure on a heavy track in the Sydney Cup, and a 5th in Gr.1 Doomben Cup. The Chosen One's final race on the 22nd June 2022 in the Q22 WFA (2200m) at Eagle Farm, but sadly he bowed out finishing well down the field.

The Chosen One joined the rejuvenated stallion roster at The Oaks Stud in the 2023 breeding season. The Chosen One joins Champion European Two-year-old and Champion Sprinter U S Navy Flag and proven Classic sire Roc de Cambes at the Cambridge farm, with stalwart Darci Brahma recently retired from stud duties.
