SWEET IDEA

She was a sweet little speedster for Gai, that blazed over the turf in record time

Sweet Idea is by leading sire Snitzel (by Redoute's Choice) out of Flidais (by Timber Country). Sweet Idea, who was bred in Australia was the richest mare her age (or younger) in the world. She is the most successful horse in Magic Millions of all time, having placed second in the two-year-old Gold Coast Magic Millions (2012) and going on to win the three-year-old Gold Coast Magic Millions (2013). No horse has ever won both races. She was the winner of the Gr.1 Galaxy and a multiple Group race winner.

An outstanding daughter of Snitzel, Sweet Idea was a A$240,000 purchase by Gai Waterhouse & James Harron Bloodstock from Arrowfield Stud at the 2012 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Sweet Idea, the fifth individual Group One winner for Snitzel, is one of three winners for her dam Flidais, two of them stakes winners. As well as Sweet Idea she is the dam of Magic Millions graduate Rush – a 10 time winner in Malaysia and Singapore. He won the Anniversay Cup at Penang and was second in the Magic Millions Juvenile Championship at Kranji.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse, Sweet Idea won her first race as a two-year-old at Randwick on October 20, 2012, setting a class record for 1000 metres of 57.39 sec. Sweet Idea went on to a successful career as a two-year-old, winning the Gr.2 Silver Slipper, placing second in the Gold Coast Magic Millions, and 3rd in the Gr.1 2013 Golden Slipper behind Overreach. As a three-year-old Sweet Idea won the 3yo Gold Coast Magic Millions, the 3yo Wyong Magic Millions, the Gr.2 Light Fingers Stakes and was second in the 2014 Gr.1 Coolmore Classic behind the Joseph Pride trained, Steps In Time. At age four, Sweet Idea won the Gr.1 Galaxy, the Gr.2 Missile Stakes and the Gr.2 Tristarc Stakes. In addition as a four-year-old, Sweet Idea finished 2nd in the 2014 Gr.1 Myer Classic behind Bonaria and the Gr.1 Memsie Stakes before being retired in April 2015.

Sweet Idea retired after 19 starts having been placed in the money 16 times. Her career earnings were significant for a horse with so few starts in total, making her an outstanding broodmare prospect. An injury ended any chance of Sweet Idea racing at the Winter Carnival soon after she won the Galaxy at Rosehill, and the decision was taken to sell the mare publicly. The grand mare lived up to her star billing at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, presented at the auction by Widden Stud as agent for her connections and purchased by her former part owner Nick Vass for $1.6 million.
