SNAP
She was small but powerful and displayed sheer class as a two and three-year-old
Snap was breed by Sovereign Lodge Stud and owned by the Dowager Duchess of & Estate of the late Duke of Bedford. She was sired by the brilliant racehorse Kingdom Bay by dam, Crackle (Schweppeshire Lad). The filly was trained by Dave & Paul O'Sullivan at Matamata and predominantly ridden by Dave's other son, Lance, with Brian York taking the rides in Australia.
Snap began her career in December 1992 as a two-year-old, with a dominant debut win over 990m at Rotorua. She rocketed out to the lead with a commanding win. The green filly then backed that up by winning at Tauranga over 970m, but in January she was swamped late in the 2yo Magic Millions Classic at Trentham over 1200m, finishing 5th. By March 1993 the juvenile had strengthened up significantly, taking out the TVNZ Magic Millions (1200m) fillies event back in Wellington, setting the pace and kicking away to win by over five lengths with David Walsh aboard. She then scored her first Gr.1 victory in the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes (1400m), shooting away on the turn to win by two and a half lengths in a brilliant victory.
After a spell, the filly returned in the spring of 1993 as a 3yo to win the Gr.3 Gold Trail Stakes (1200m) fresh up at Hasting, putting away the opposition easily. In October she continued on her winning ways with victory in the Gr.3 Lowland Stakes (1400m), beating Face The Music, who she would do many battles with. Another top trophy beckoned and the filly put in a huge finish to take out the Gr.1 NZ 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton, stamping her class as the best 3yo in New Zealand. A disappointing 5th in the Gr.1 Bayer Classic at Otaki's performance was impacted by the heavy track conditions, however, in December she demonstrated her capabilities by securing a decisive victory in the Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes (1600m) at Manawatu. Up over more distance, Snap ran 4th in the Gr.3 Royal Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie, but this was only a precursor for what was to come. In late January 1994, Snap won the Gr.1 NZ Oaks (2400m) with Lance O’Sullivan steering, proving she could actually stay the distance. It was a great training effort by the Dave and Paul O'Sullivan to get the filly into such tremendous shape for the mile and a half. She then ran 4th in the Gr.2 Sir Tristram Classic (2000m) at Te Rapa and finally went out for a break in the paddock.
Returning fresh with an Australian campaign mapped out, Snap won the Gr.2 Enerco Stakes (1400m) at Hastings in September 1994. Unfortunately she struck another heavy track at Pukekohe and put in one of her worst NZ runs in an Open Handicap, never looking likely at any stage. The O'Sullivans then crossed the Tasman with Snap to contest the Gr.1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley in October, but sadly she was outclassed in a fast run affair, won by Solvit, with Rough Habit 2nd.
Snap returned in January 1995 to run 8th in the 1200m Telegraph at Trentham, but scored the Gr.1 WFA Waikato Draught Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa with a fine display of her true sprinting ability.
Snap returned to Melbourne in March 1995, running 6th in the Gr.1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) behind Schillaci and Juene, but in her next start at Flemington, Snap won the Gr.3 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1623m), beating home Tristera and Tristalove. The Doncaster was a bridge too far so the team returned the horse to Matamata and went after her second Enerco Stakes in September. She looked likely, but had to settle for 2nd to Marconee with Solvit third. Another mixed bag followed in a further trip to Melbourne, with a 6th in the Feehan, a creditable 3rd in the Gr.1 W.H Stocks at the Valley, a 5th in the Toorak at Caulfield and a further 5th in the Gr.1 Nissan at Flemington. After returning home, Snap had one more local campaign but the edge seemed to be missing. She ran 3rd in the Telegraph behind Loader, 4th in the Waikato Sprint behind Allegro, and 3rd the the WFA Terrace Regency behind Diablo Girl. Her final race was in the 1996 Group one Captain Cook Stakes (1600m), where she battled away for 5th. Snap finished her career with 11 wins from 30 starts and $600,000 in earnings. She was a fantastic little speedster that could run up over ground and gave her all as a five-time Group one winner in New Zealand features.
Snap as a broodmare produced decent pedigree through her breeding stock. Bedtime Story was bred and is part-owned by Henrietta Duchess of Bedford out of an unraced mare in Happy Endings (Tavistock). Snapshot is a thoroughbred horse born in New Zealand in 2010, and is by Stravinsky (USA) out of Snap, trained by Danica Guy who achieved six wins.
