SEPOY

A brilliant juvenile, Sepoy was a sprinting machine, compared to legend Luskin Star

Sepoy is a home-bred horse of Darley Stud by world record-breaking stallion Elusive Quality out of the Danehill mare Watchful. The dam is the full sister to Camarena, winner of the Group One Queensland Derby who in turn is the dam of Sires' Produce.

Sepoy became the first horse since Rancher (1982) and Bel Esprit (2002) to win all three legs of the 2010 Blue Diamond series as a two-year-old. Sepoy surprised punters, but not the Peter Snowden stable when he impressively won the colts & geldings Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield. The unbeaten Peter Moody trained Golden Archer was the favourite, however the Shiekh Mohammed-owned colt ridden my Mark Zahra trailed the leader before racing clear for a three length win over Grand Britannia with Golden Archer third. The Elusive Quality colt beat Delago's Lad in the Maribynong Trial Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on debut in October 2010 before a break in the paddock.

The top class colt was then dominant in Melbourne with the demolition of his rivals in the Gr.1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200) at Caulfield in February 2011. Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, Sepoy was sent out the shortest priced favourite since Rancher in 1982 at $1.40 on the strength of his unbeaten three start career. He won on debut over the spring carnival at Flemington, then was put away with the Blue Diamond in mind. And that he did, as he left his rivals standing at the top of the straight and coasted home to a 4-1/4 length win. Sepoy eventually settled second outside the leader and that pair shared the speed to the turn. But no sooner had they straightened then McEvoy asked Sepoy for more and he had plenty to give, bolting clear and setting up a massive break. It was a fight only for the minors as McEvoy eased his mount down to score in 1.08.55, less than a second outside the track record set by Miss Andretti. Hallowed Belle, who raced sixth throughout, worked home into second, just a head clear of Masthead who ran on strongly from the back. His win in race record time pushed his Timeform master figure of 122+ beyond the 20 year high in the Blue Diamond of 123 set by Redoute’s Choice in 1999. Hayasugi in 2024 was the first since Sepoy to win the Preview/Prelude/Diamond treble.

Sepoy then became one of only five Blue Diamond winners to also win the Golden Slipper. The Peter Snowden-trained colt became the first since Courtza, the most recent filly to achieve it, following Bounding Away (1986), Manikato (1978) and John's Hope (1972). Sepoy, ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, had the race in his keeping after getting to leader Karuta Queen shortly after hitting the home straight. The Darley-owned colt hit the lead near the 200 metres and went on to defeat Mosheen with Elite Falls third. Trainer Peter Snowden was in tears after claiming his first victory in the world’s richest race for two-year-olds. He then went on to win the Vain Stakes, Danehill Stakes, the Manikato and the Caulfield Sprint throughout 2011 as a three-year-old. Although the margin was narrow Sepoy remained unbeaten in his 2011 campaign after scoring a gritty victory in the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington, beating home Foxwedge and Satin Shoes. Sepoy won all five starts in the spring preparation, including the Group One Manikato Stakes where he beat the older horses, including More Joyous. The Coolmore was his swan song for the year and his final run in 2011. Sepoy was beaten just once in his 11 starts when Smart Missile claimed him in the Todman Stakes in March.

In February 2012, Sepoy took on the Gr.1 Oakleigh Plate, beaten by Queensland star, Woorim at Caulfield. Sepoy missed the start slightly before charging through to share the lead with Winter King. Burdened by his 58kg, Sepoy faded to run fifth. Darley's Henry Plumptre was philosophical after Sepoy's defeat, only his second in a 12-start career. The weight stopped him in the last 50m. The juggle to have Sepoy fit to win but keep enough in reserve to peak for Dubai's Golden Shaheen was a tricky challenge for trainer Snowden. Sadly, Sepoy finished near last on the unfamiliar Tapeta surface in the rich Dubai sprint feature in 40° heat and bowed out unplaced in the Gr.1 July Cup (1200m) on an unsuitable heavy Newmarket track in England.

Sepoy acted as a shuttle stallion for Darley Stud between both the northern and southern hemispheres His offspring includes, Salute The Soldier who won eight of his 21 starts including the Gr.2 Al Maktoum Challenge Gr.3 Burj Nahaar. Sepoy is the sire of 11 Group scorers including three-time Gr.1 winner Alizee, Classic winner Unforgetable Filly and Gr.1 performers Dabyah and Indian Blessing. Sepoy was retired from stud duty after the 2021 breeding season to spend his retirement at Woodlands Stud in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales.
