SEBRING
He only raced six times and won five, but he could of been anything before retiring
Sebring was a premium two-year old Australian Thoroughbred racehorse that won five of his six race starts in a short but virtuoso career. After winning the AJC Breeders' Plate in his spring debut, he had wins in the Golden Slipper and AJC Sires Produce Stakes and second place, (defeated by a nose), in the AJC Champagne Stakes. He was a chestnut stallion standing 16.1 hands high that was foaled on 23 September 2005. Sebring was by More Than Ready from Purespeed (by Flying Spur). Bred by Corumbene Stud Pty Ltd, he was sold at the 2007 Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Sales to Star Thoroughbreds for A$130,000 and trained by Gai Waterhouse.
Sebring’s preparations for his racing career got off to a stuttering start because 2007/08 was the season disrupted by Equine Influenza (E.I) but, even so, Gai Waterhouse had him ready to make his debut over 1100m at Rosehill in the middle of January. He won comfortably and then four weeks later, handled the step up to listed company in his stride, easily landing the Canonbury Stakes over 1000m at Randwick. Two weeks later he took out the Breeders’ Plate over 1100m at Randwick, slotting himself nicely into Golden Slipper favouritism. He enjoyed great success as a two-year-old, and despite the track coming up heavy on Slipper Day at Rosehill that year, nor a change of jockey to Glen Boss, it couldn't prevent Sebring from extending his unbeaten run to four, even if he did only have a nose to spare over Von Costa De Hero (Encosta De Lago) at the line.
Blake Shinn returned for the $450,000 AJC Sires Produce Stakes at Randwick in which he rode Sebring to win the race, the second leg of the juvenile triple crown. The second leg was more clear-cut as Sebring defeated Samantha Miss (Redoute’s Choice) by a length in the Group one race. He duly started odds-on in the third leg in another seven days’ time but went down by a head to Samantha Miss in the Gr.1 Champagne Stakes. There was, though, no disgrace in that – particularly not after Samantha Miss won all the major fillies’ races in Sydney the following spring before heading down to Melbourne to take her Group One tally to three by landing the Gr.1 VRC Victoria Oaks. In late July 2008, Sebring had stress-related bone bruising and had to be spelled for two months, effectively ending any attempt at the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Following an unsatisfactory fitness trial on 27 January 2009, the owners of Sebring decided to retire the horse to stud. Widden Stud had bought a controlling interest in the colt at the end of his two-year-old campaign in a deal which valued him at $30 million. That, on top of his earnings of $2,537,060, meant that it became a no-brainer for the syndicate to draw stumps on his racing career and prepare him instead for the 2009 breeding season.
He was standing at the Widden Stud at a service fee of $60,500 inc GST. Sebring died of a heart attack aged 13 years whilst still performing stud duties at Widden Stud.
