SEACHANGE

Seachange won a record seven Group one races in NZ and took on a champion horse

Seachange was breed by Karreman Bloodstock Ltd and was foaled in November 2002. She is by the sire Cape Cross (Green Desert) out of the mare Just Cruising by Broad Reach. The filly began racing in September 2005 as a 3yo and won her first start at Paeroa by half a length. She then won four additional races during that campaign, including the Gr.1 NZ 1000 Guineas, and remained undefeated. In July 2006, Seachange won her next start, then suffered her first defeat, being beaten by less than a length by Bulginbaah and Don't Ya Lovett. She then contested the Hastings Triple Crown and enter a highly anticipated clash with the million-dollar colt Darci Brahma. Seachange won her second Group One in the Mudgway Stakes, with Darci Brahma closing fast for 2nd, a length behind. The two met again in the Gr.1 Stoneybridge Stakes, with Seachange prevailing by a nose, with commentator Tony Lee declaring "What a horse race!" Seachange moved on to the final race of the Hastings Triple Crown: the Gr.1 Kelt Capital Stakes. Despite her best efforts, she was beaten by less than a length by Legs and Kerry O'Reilly. Seachange pressed forward with an Australian campaign, finishing 2nd in the Myer Classic.

Seachange participated two months later in the Gr.1 Telegraph Handicap at Trentham. This time, the slick Darci Brahma won by 1.5 lengths. Seachange then went on a second Australian Campaign, with a win in the 2007 Gr.3 Mannerism Stakes, 2nd in the Gr.1 Futurity Stakes to the Waterhouse trained Aqua D'Amore, and 5th in the Gr.1 CF Orr Stakes. She then returned refreshened for the Gr.1 Telegraph Handicap down at Trentham in January 2008, the race she had lost the previous year. This time, however, she came out on top. With the top weight of 58.5 kg, Seachange was given full reign at the 200 m mark and won by 3L in 1.06.66, the second-fastest time for a race over 1200m. She backed up in the Gr.1 Waikato Draught Sprint at Te Rapa, which was her test run for a trip to the 2008 Dubai World Cup Meeting. Despite winning by only half a length, it was decided she would make the trip to Dubai to contest the Million Dubai Duty Free.

Her race prior to the Dubai Duty Free was the $250,000 Jabel Hatta-Nayef at Nad al Sheba. Despite the challenging circumstances, including a wide draw and carrying a significant weight of 58 kg, she managed to secure a respectable 6th place finish. The trainers were pleased with the outcome and expressed confidence in preparation for the upcoming Dubai Duty Free event. Seachange finished 6th in the Dubai feature, just under 2.5L from the winner, Jay Peg. She then raced in England. Top New Zealand trainer Graeme Sanders took over the training for this campaign, after original trainer Ralph Manning dropped out. Seachange's first start in England was in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot over 1200m, where she finished a poor 12th. She stepped up to 1600m for her final career start, the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, where she finished 4th.

Seachange returned to New Zealand in August 2008. On 7 October 2008, it was revealed she had a life-saving operation on a twisted bowel. She was then retired and has produced eight foals. 2009: Thornton by Zabeel, Divan by Zabeel, placed at Group 3 level, Sea Goddess, by Darci Brahma, Away Cruising by Darci Brahma, Pelican by Fastnet Rock, World Cruise by Tavistock, Rising Tide by Darci Brahma, 2020: foal by Savabeel - exported. Her broodmare career has now ended. Champion mare Seachange was a flagship performer for The Oaks Stud and her legacy continues to be felt on both sides of the Tasman.
