RED HANDED
Bart would score his 3rd consecutive Melbourne Cup with another high quality, Kiwi-bred stayer
Red Handed (1962−1990) was a New-Zealand bred, Australian-trained Thoroughbred racehorse, who won the 1967 Melbourne Cup. He was sired by the French stallion, Le Filou, the sire of Light Fingers. His New Zealand bred dam, Red Might, was by Red Mars (GB). The horse was purchased from Pirongia Stud in New Zealand quite cheaply by Cummings for the sum of 870 guineas. This was due to the horse having a club foot and a paralysed ear - an injury incurred as a result of being kicked in the head by another horse as a yearling, paralysing the nerves down one side of his face.
Starting out as a three-year-old, Red Handed won his maiden on debut at Balaklava in March 1966, then followed that up with another victory at Murray Bridge over 1200m. A 3rd and 2nd placing were preceeded by another win at Morphettville over 1800m, a 2nd in the Pulman Stakes at Cheltenham and then three consecutive victories to finish off his 3YO campaign. They included two at Victoria Park in Adelaide, including the Alderman Cup over 2600m, defeating Hunting Horn on both occasions. He would finish off with a win in July over 2000m at Morphettville.
In August 1966, Red Handed would have his only run a a four-year-old, winning the Queen's Cup at Cheltenham, but it was as a five-year-old that the stayer would come into his own.
Returning in August 1967, the galloper won a sprint over 1000m at Victoria Park then ran a strong 3rd at Moonee Valley. In the lead up to the Melbourne Cup, the gelding placed second in the Toorak Handicap and the Caulfield Cup, defeated in both by the brilliant Tobin Bronze. His final lead up race resulted in a 4th to Winfreux in the LKS Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington three days prior to the Melbourne Cup. On the 5th November 1967, Red Handed would walk out a happy and contended horse according to Roy Higgins and face 22 competitiors on a fast track, with the Cup stake now $60,000, with $41,000 for first and a Gold Cup.
At the furlong and a half, Red Handed had taken the lead from Bellition, with Red Crest on the outside and Padtheway coming through on the inside. Despite being headed in the straight by Red Crest, Red Handed fought back to win the race by a neck under hard riding from jockey Roy Higgins in a time of 3:20.4. Red Handed main career win was in the 1967 Cup as a five year old carrying 55kgs from barrier 19 and ridden by "The Professor". It was a tough and punishing effort to beat Red Crest from the fast charging Floodbird in front of 84,000 spectators. The South Australian stayer gave Bart Cummings his third win in a row in the great race who would go on to record twelve Melbourne Cup winners. It was the second victory for Roy Higgins who had brought home Light Fingers for Bart in the 1965 Melbourne Cup. It was also the third Kiwi-bred horse in consecutive Cups if you include Barts other runner, Galilee in 1966. For good measure, he also trained the second placegetters in 1965 and 1966.
General Command was the favourite in the 1967 Cup. This was the beginning of the end for big punter Filipe Ysmael who had $250,000 to win on General Command with bookmaker Bill Waterhouse. Felipe lost his will to punt hard again, which marked the beginning of a large spate of losses. Known as 'The Babe' and 'Filipino Fireball' in racing circles, Felipe Ysmael was among the most famous punters of the 1960's who believed in giant punts.
