KAAPSTAD
Fantastic as a 2YO, Kaapstad became a formidable sire, producing Group one winners and quality broodmares
Kaapstad, who was royally bred by Sir Tristram from Eight Carat, commenced stud duties at Nelson and Sue Schick's Windsor Park Stud in New Zealand in 1988 following his purchase for $A4 million by Robert Sangster's Swettenham Stud - a record price for a stallion purchased in Australasia at that time. Eight Carat produced five individual Group One winners, including Octagonal, Mouawad, Kaapstad, Diamond Lover and Marquise who had 28 stakes wins between them. Windsor Park's purchase of Kaapstad came after his outstanding win in the Gr. 1 VRC Sires Produce Stakes in Melbourne. Kaapstad a high class racehorse who lived up to his exceptional bloodlines on the track was trained by the late Colin Hayes during his racing career. He never reached his true potential on the track as he was plagued by foot problems. The stallion was certainly one of the best two-year-olds in Australia of his year. From 22 starts he had 7 wins, 6 seconds and 2 thirds, from 1000m to 2200m with career stakes totalling $541,850. His main wins were in the VRC Sires Produce and the Gr.2 Ascot Vale Stakes. As a 3yo he fell short by a head to Celtic Spirit in the 2400m Gr.1 SAJC Derby. Handicap and he also ran placings in good quality races.
Kaapstad is the sire of 43 stakes winners including seven at Gr. 1 level. Kaapstad's Gr.1 winners have been Love Dance (Kelt Capital Stakes and Avondale Cup), Kaaptive Edition (STC BMW Stakes and ARC Ellerslie Sires' Produce Stakes), Tall Poppy (Thorndon Mile, Waikato Draught Stakes, ARC Lion Red Stakes), Vegas (Telegraph Handicap), Catalan Opening (Doncaster Handicap and VRC Chrysler Stakes), Sprint By (Doncaster Handicap) and Golden Sword (Epsom Handicap and Toorak Handicap).
Kaapstad sired 365 individual winners in his stud career and his progeny have won a total of 1192 races worldwide. Kaapstad has also had a major impact as a broodmare sire, as his daughters have produced a number of Group one winners, such as Hong Kong's champion galloper Lucky Owners, New Zealand dual Gr.1 juvenile winners Grout, Kapiston, and Winged Foot, G1 winning filly, Star Satire, and dual Australian G1 winner, Perlin. He was a sire with a very high percentage of stakes winners to runners and did a great job at stud considering he never had big numbers of runners. One of New Zealand's most successful sires of the past decade, Kaapstad, was humanely put down at Windsor Park Stud in Cambridge on because of ill health in May of 2006. Kaapstad was 21.
