JEZABEEL
Champion stayer Jezabeel was foaled in 1992 and was by Zabeel out of the mare Passefleur (by Vice Regal), indeed a royally bred thoroughbred of the highest order. She was bred by respected New Zealand racing identity, Jeanette Broome, who achieved international success as the breeder of Seagram, a son of Balak who won the 1991 Grand National Steeplechase (6900m) at Aintree. Broome, who enjoyed a lengthy involvement with the Waikato branch of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Association, established Loch-Haven Thoroughbreds near Hamilton in the early 1970s. Jezabeel was trained by Brian Jenkins at Cambridge. Jenkins' father Peter trained at Takanini as did another brother Gary while Brian Jenkins was based at Cambridge before he shifted to Melbourne in 2006. The third brother, Paul Jenkins, trained the 2001 Doomben Cup winner King Keitel and won the 2005 Auckland Cup with Bazelle before shifting his operation to Queensland.
In April 1995, as a 2 year old, she won a 2YO Handicap on debut ridden by David Johnson. Later that month Jezabeel won the the listed 1600m Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie Racecourse. Saved for the Autumn she travelled the Tasman to Flemington in September 1995, but was last of seven in a 3YO fillies race. The mare did not race again until winning a Class 2 1400m event at Tauranga in February 1997. A Class 3 and Open Handicap win would follow throughout the year.
In December 1997 she was second to Paddy O’Riley in the Manawatu Cup. On New Years Day 1998, Jezabeel delivered apprentice Opie Bosson his first Group One victory in the Auckland Cup, driving the big mare hard at the line, beating Aerosmith by a short neck with North Lady third.
After a couple of trials at home in May, Jezabeel was based in Victoria from June of 1998. She would compete in a couple of Handicap and Welterweight races to build up strength and stamina before tackling the Gr.1 Underwood Stakes in September. The mare would throw out a brilliant run to go down half a length to the classy Tie The Knot. Three sixth-place finishes would follow in the Turnbull and Yalumba Stakes and the Caulfield Cup. Jezabeel was ridden by Chris Munce in the Melbourne Cup. She and fellow Zabeel mare, Champagne delivered sweet revenge when fighting out the finish of the Melbourne Cup. The race provided a turn of fortune after both mares had suffered interference caused by jockey Ray Cochrane on Taufan's Melody in the Caulfield Cup, who went on to win the feature. Jezabeel is the only horse to have won both the Melbourne Cup and the Auckland Cup. The Melbourne Cup victory was her last race. She won seven races total in her career.
John Singleton owned Jezabeel for several years from the end of her career, with the mare foaling down three thoroughbreds by Danehill, one by Carnegie and Danehill's champion son, Rock Of Gibraltar. Singo sold Jezabeel's first foal at the 2002 Magic Millions sales, with his close mate Gerry Harvey paying $475,000 for a filly after she had failed to meet her reserve of $500,000. Singleton's Strawberry Hill Stud kept the second filly by Danehill. Melbourne trainer Mark Kavanagh paid $200,000 for a Street Sense filly which by Jezabeel topped bidding in the 2011 Magic Millions Perth yearling sale. Jezabeel passed away in 2015 having produced eight foals.
