HOT DANISH
Hot Danish was the $32,000 flyer that had a bomb proof, never say quit style
Hot Danish was foaled in 2003, sired by Nothin' Leica Dane and out of the broodmare, Hot n' Breezy (Zephyr Zip). Les Bridge bought her at the Inglis Scone Yearling Sale in 2005 for $32,000. He had a favourable impression of her based on her credentials, but he was not as enthusiastic after seeing her in the flesh. Despite initial reservations, the exceptionally gifted sprinter exceeded all expectations. Hot Danish won 16 races in total, including 2 Group 1 races, and a string of Stakes races during her career. In the course of her career, she also gained significant popularity and acclaim within the Sydney horse racing community. Her striking jet-black appearance undoubtedly contributed to her appeal and recognition.
Hot Danish debuted at Kembla Grange in September of 2006. As much as $6.00 was bet on-course; she jumped and won at $3.60. Hot Danish won seven of her first eight starts, steered by Tim Clark in all but her maiden. Still an apprentice at the time, Clark was taken by the filly’s power.
She was stranded in Sydney during the Spring of 2007, which was of course the year of Equine Influenza during the 2008 Autumn Carnival. The black mare was widely anticipated to secure victory in the Coolmore Classic, which was conducted on Golden Slipper day as part of the restructured Autumn Carnival in the aftermath of Equine Influenza and the subsequent resumption of racing in Sydney. She encountered a deep, heavy track, and ran second to the talented Eskimo Queen. Wet tracks would bring Hot Danish undone on numerous occasions. The mare needed a firm surface and just couldn't quicken in the wet, and because of her excellent race record, was asked to carry significant weights, 57kg to the winner's 56kg. With the track conditions and weight working against her, a commendable second-place finish was a great result. Hot Danish would then go on to win the 2008 Gr.2 Salinger Stakes (1200m) with Danny Nikolic aboard - a race that was named in her honour in 2019. She won the sprint race coming down the outside with ears pinned back. Hot Danish would go on to win the 2009 Gr.2 Breeders Classic
Back at Royal Randwick, in the Listed Wiggle Quality Stakes, which she'd won the year before, Hot Danish carried the grandstand, all 61kg of it, however her fresh up record was supreme. The Wiggle is named after another grand racemare, who raced in the late 1950s. Wiggle's victories included the Caulfield Guineas, Stradbroke Handicap, Champagne Stakes, Linlithgow and Hobartville Stakes. Hot Danish was saved for the Queen of the Turf Stakes but again struck a wet track, and ran second to Neroli. She then then struggled during the Spring carnival of 2009. She ran down the track behind Typhoon Tracy, and her trainer Les Bridge would say later that he just didn't have her right that Spring. She had been beaten in her seven previous Group One attempts – including three times as the bridesmaid.
In 2010, the bonny black mare showed all was well again though. On 20th March 2010, which was Coolmore Classic Day, she won the Gr.2 Canterbury Stakes. It was during this autumn campaign that Hot Danish finally nailed that elusive Group 1 victory. Hot Danish firstly contested the Gr.1 TJ Smith Stakes on 10 April 2010, and she loomed up to take the lead. However there was a collective groan when the three-year-old year old Redoute's Choice filly, Melito overpowered her to win. Melito's was a very good racehorse since she emerged as a two-year-old, and she carried only 54.5kg to Hot Danish's 56.5kg.
But Hot Danish returned to Royal Randwick full of defiance a fortnight later on Sydney Cup day. She fronted up for the Gr.1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) on 24 April 2010. Melito had no answer to the black mare's determined charge, as Hot Danish pinned her ears back and went straight past her. The roar from the crowd was deafening, and the race caller was emotional as well. When she crossed the line her jockey Tim Clark punched the air in triumph. She won the Gr.2 Premiere Stakes, first up with punters sending the glamour mare out as $1.35 favourite. It was the outstanding mare's first start since breaking through for back-to-back Group One wins in the All-Aged Stakes and Doomben 10,000 earlier in the year. Victory in the AJC The Shorts followed, in driving rain, on Epsom Day.
Hot Danish met Black Caviar on Cox Plate Day, in the Gr.2 Moir Stakes and ran second. Black Caviar, who had proved herself to be a sensation, and it was no disgrace to be beaten, albeit well beaten by a horse who's rated the very best racehorse in the world. Hot Danish then disappointed in terrible conditions on VRC Derby Day in the Gr.1 Myer Classic behind the mudlark Sacred Choice and Typoon Tracy. The heavens opened after race there which dented any chance of her winning. Flemington recorded about 50mm of rain between races five and eight, with the race run in appalling conditions. Hot Danish raced four more times after The Shorts before suffering a leg injury in a Randwick barrier trial win in March of 2011. The leg however became infected and after prolonged treatment at Randwick Equine Centre, Hot Danish was euthanased, just a day after Clark landed a Randwick Group 1 double in the Doncaster and The Galaxy.
