FURY’S ORDER
Fury's Order (foaled in New Zealand, 1970) was a chestnut thoroughbred horse, who raced successfully in New Zealand and Australia. He was by the sire Indian Order out of the mare Our Fury. Her sire Le Filou was the brilliant producer of great stayers. He was responsible for the champion Cummings trained Light Fingers, second to Galilee in the 1966 Melbourne Cup and part of a stirring two horse war with stablemate Ziema in the 1965 Melbourne Cup, when Roy Higgins lifted her to win by a nose. Another son, Red Handed, was also victorious in the 1967 Cup, before Fileur ran 2nd in 1968. A good class performer in England and France, Le Filou was by the St Simon line sire Vatellor from Fileuse by Casterari. It is a very distinguished family that includes Herbager, a French Derby winner and tail male ancestor of Encosta de Lago’s sire Star Way, and represented by one of Australasia’s greatest ever sires Zabeel.
Renowned horsesman Wally McEwan knew how to set a horse for a race and trained Fury's Order from his Hawera, South Taranaki base. Fury's Order is notable for winning major races in New Zealand as well as the 1975 W.S Cox Plate ridden by Brent Thomson, Australia's premier weight-for-age race, and the New Zealand Cup. The Plate was run in atrocious conditions at Moonee Valley with the meeting later called off. As a five-year-old he ran the slowest ever time of 2:20.4 for the 2040m race. Kiwi Can lead into the straight but Thomson hugged the rails and managed to run him down the tiring horse. His Sire, Indian Order was well known for producing swimmers that excelled on heavy tracks, and the tough stayer was not going to be denied that day.
Fury's Order's 16 wins included the 1973 Wellington Guineas ridden by Des Harris, beating the Dave O'Sullivan trained Oopik and Paterangi; 1973 New Zealand 2000 Guineas beating Lechyd and Pakistan Flight. The 1973 New Zealand Derby beating Jandell and Tinryland Lass; 1973 Hawkes Bay Cup (Jim Walker) beating Jackaroo and Guest Star; 1974 New Zealand Cup, beating Roaming and Heckle's Choice; 1974 Manawatu Challenge Stakes beating Count Kereru and King's Romance. 1975 Cox Plate (Brent Thomson) beating Kiwi Can and Analight. After racing, Fury's Order retired to Stud in Australia, where he achieved only very moderate success. After standing at stud for 5–6 years, he was struck by lightning in his paddock and died instantly.
