EXCEED AND EXCEL
A high class juvenile, Exceed And Excel was a champion sprinter and a brilliant sire for over 29 years
Exceed And Excel, foaled 5 September 2000 is a retired multiple Group One winning Australian thoroughbred racehorse. Bred by the Ascot Breeding Partnership, he is a son of Danehill out of the US-bred mare Patrona (Lomond), and was bought for $375,000 at the 2002 Inglis Easter yearling sale, purchased by his eventual trainer Tim Martin, who famously bought the colt with no owners in mind. Nick Moraitis and Alan Osburg ended up in the ownership, and he developed into a racetrack phenomenon. After his racing career ended he has been successful as a breeding stallion, having sired over 150 Stakes winners. He served at stud in both his native Australia and during shuttle stints at both Dalham Hall Stud in England and Kildangan Stud in Ireland.
Advertising his instant precocity, Exceed And Excel landed the Gr.2 Todman Slipper Trial Stakes on his third start in 2003, laying the foundation for his brilliant 3-year-old career. In Australia he only raced as a two-year-old and three-year-old, while his main success came as a three-year-old when he won the Gr.1 Dubai Racing Club Cup and the Newmarket Handicap, on both occasions ridden by Corey Brown. His last race was in the 2004 July Cup in England where he finished unplaced.
Exceed And Excel was sold to Darley Stud for a reported record A$ 22 million. He was retired from stud duties in March 2024, aged 23 as a veteran stallion that was at service for 20 years. At the time of his retirement he had sired 215 individual stakes race winners, including 18 Group 1 winners. He is the only Australian-bred sire to have sired more than 200 individual stakes winners. His offspring has produced some champion racehorses, including, Bivouac, Reward for Effort, Guelph, Overreach, Cylinder, September Run and Helmet, one of his sire sons. He also sired Mr Stunning, winner of the Hong Kong Sprint (twice) and the Chairman's Sprint Prize, Excelebration, another sire son, winner of the the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, Prix Jacques Le Marois, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Mawj, winner of the 1000 Guineas Stakes, Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes and Mischief, Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.
Exceed And Excel's next significant European sire sons were Bungle Inthejungle and Kuroshio, who retired to stud in 2015. There has been more to write about Exceed And Excel as a sire of sires in Europe than in the Southern Hemisphere, but as a broodmare sire, it has been a case of vice versa. His daughters across Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa have produced 21 stakes winners, including group one celebrities Alizee, Astern, Bounding, and Prompt Response, while those in Europe have produced 11.
