DANEWIN

Danewin carved out a phenomenal record on the Turf and proved himself at stud

A member of Danehill’s very first foal crop of 1991, which also included the Golden Slipper winner Danzero and Stradbroke winner Dansinga, Danewin proved to be every bit as good as any son of the incomparable stallion on the racetrack and, arguably, might have been one of the most influential members of his predominant maleline. Danewin called Emirates Park home for close on 25 years following a truly memorable racing career. From 31 career starts, the outstanding 3-year-old and older horse won five major Group 1 events — all at his optimum trip of 2000 metres. Danewin mother was Cotehele Girl, he was trained by Bob Thomsen and owned in Hong Kong by Sunny Yam and A. Cheung.

Danewin’s racetrack exploits also included a further five second placings at Group 1 level, as well as a race record breaking success in the Frederick Clissold Handicap at Rosehill Gardens over 1200m to further illustrate his unquestionable versatility. The beautiful,  big chestnut stretched over the turf like his father and proved that good genes can take you a long way. Danewin’s 31 start career also witnessed a further five seconds at Group 1 level, two in the VRC Derby and AJC Derby. Shane Dye was sensationally sacked after his riding of the champion three-year-old was subject to close scrutiny from the stipendiary stewards in the Gr.1 George Main Stakes. Jackie Tse was instead selected to ride the brilliant Danewin in the Gr.1 Epsom Handicap at Sydney's Randwick racecourse. Tse had vowed never to ride in Australia again due to the constant criticism he faced from all sections of their racing media in previous rides. The horse's owners were furious with Dye who failed to take any responsibility in regards to his tactics.

Danewin's racing exploits were phenomenal, and he had the silverware to prove it. After running 4th at Rosehill in the Gr.2 Peter Pan (1500m), his form run from April 1994 until the end of his career was sublime. Danewin ran 2nd in the Gr.2 Gloaming, won the Dulcify Stakes at Randwick, carried on to win the Gr.1 Championship there, placed 2nd in the VRC Derby at Flemington, won the Gr.3 Royal Sovereign, the Gr.2 Hobartville, ran 3rd in the Canterbury Guineas, won the Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas, ran 2nd in the Gr.1 AJC Derby, 2nd in the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, won the Gr.3 Hollindale on the Gold Coast, won the Gr.1 Doomben Cup, ran 3rd in the Gr.2 Theo Marks, 2nd in the Gr.1 George Main, 2nd in the Gr.1 Epsom, won the Gr.1 Caulfield Stakes and the Gr.1 McKinnon Stakes, before finishing out with a final win at Rosehill in the Gr.3 Clissold. A simply remarkable record that few could ever match. His last race was a disappointing 10th in the Dubai World Cup on the 17th March 2006 before he was retired to stud.

Despite a 17-year stud career which yielded fewer than 500 lifetime foals due to well-documented fertility issues, the Emirates Park resident still managed to leave his mark on the domestic breeding scene by siring 25 individual stakes winners, the best of them undoubtedly proving to be multiple Group 1 winner Theseo, winner of five races at the highest level. Not to be overlooked either are the deeds of Elegant Fashion, a dual Group 2 winning daughter of Danewin that went on to make history as an ultra-rare member of the fairer sex to claim the Hong Kong Derby. In total, Danewin sired 281 winners from 385 starters, for progeny earnings of over $51 million. His daughters have also produced a further 260 individual winners of more than $27 million, the most significant being the triple G1 winner, Fawkner.
