COOLANGATTA

A brilliant young sprinter who only raced seven times could have achieved greatness

An Australian $280,000 purchase by Maher from the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Milburn Creek draft, the Highclere Stud-bred Coolangatta backed up her stylish Randwick barrier trial as an early season two-year-old to win the Gimcrack Stakes, a performance which saw her installed as the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. Placed with the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace stables and ridden by James McDonald, Coolangatta is out of the incredibly successful sire Written Tycoon by dam, Pipping Hot (More Than Ready).

Coolangatta was named after the famous southern Gold Coast beach which was perfect for her next race. She won the A$2m race on the Gold Coast two starts later, having landed the B J McLachlan Stakes in between, before rounding out her campaign with a third in the Golden Slipper Stakes. At three, Coolangatta completed her Group one double either side of a spell, prompting a campaign aimed at Royal Ascot and the King’s Stand Stakes, in which she tired late to finish unplaced. The electric sprinter, fresh from Royal Ascot, was immediately retired and is set to visit Home Affairs, a fellow Group 1 Lightning Stakes winner, in the future breeding seasons.

Coolangatta’s illustrious career amassed over $2.4 million in earnings, highlighted by victories in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and Moir Stakes. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained galloper secured her name by placing third in the 2022 Golden Slipper and clinching victory in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic race. Coolangatta’s final race, the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, saw her start as a $5 hopeful, but luck was not on her side as she finished 11th. The four-year-old Written Tycoon mare was retired from racing after Coolmore purchased the mare in a private agreement. Coolmore purchased Coolangatta's dam Piping Hot, by More Than Ready, for $3m at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. Her connections included prominent racing identities John O'Neill and Ozzie Kheir and it is believed the young mare Coolangatta may have reached a phenomenal $5 million sum in a private deal.
