COLETTE
The powerful mare stormed home to win the Australia's 2nd richest race, the Golden Eagle
Home bred by Godolphin, Colette is the first stakes winner sired by dual Group 1 winner, Hallowed Crown,
and the highest earner Godolphin Australia has ever owned. Out of the dam, Libretto by Spingspiel, with the Irish-bred damsire winning many races internationally, including the Japan Cup and Dubai World Cup. Colette enjoyed a superb 25-start career for the breeding and racing powerhouse, highlighted by Group 1 wins in the Australian Oaks at three and Empire Rose Stakes at Flemington in the spring of 2021. Winner from 1400m to 2400m, Colette highlighted her versatility throughout her career while banking just over $7.1m in prizemoney for her yard. Former Godolphin star Hartnell earned close to $7.5m for his career but had started life racing in Europe before moving to Australia two years into his career. Colette was also a multiple Group 2 winner with triumphs in the Tristarc Stakes and Apollo Stakes in 2021 while she also claimed a Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes en route to winning the Oaks.
Unraced as a two-year-old, Colette made her debut at Hawkesbury Racecourse, finishing unplaced and beaten by a margin of 8 lengths. At her next two starts, Colette finished in second place on both occasions, however she won her first race at her fourth start when winning at Newcastle Racecourse by six lengths. After a six-week break, Colette won at Kembla Grange Racecourse and two weeks later she contested her first stakes race, the Group 3, Adrian Knox Stakes at Randwick Racecourse. Starting as a 2/1 favourite, Colette settled midfield before weaving her way through runners in the first half of the home straight. She stormed to the front at the 100m and drew away win by 2-3/4 lengths.
Seven days later, Colette contested the Australian Oaks at the same course. This was her first attempt in a Group 1 race. Starting favourite at the odds of 2/1 and with Glen Boss in the saddle, Colette took the lead at the 300-metre mark over the 2400m distance and won by 2-1/2 lengths. Already a Group 1 winner when taking the ATC Australian Oaks (2400m) in 2020, Colette was eligible for a $1 million bonus on top of the $600,000 first prize thanks to a new scheme launched earlier that year. The winners of 12 races for fillies and mares across Australia and New Zealand qualified for the bonus, which would see them pocket an extra $1 million if they could also land Australia's premier race for the females, the TAB Empire Rose Stakes.
Colette was eligible after her win in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield two weeks before and the James Cummings-trained mare took full advantage of a terrific Damien Oliver ride, sprinting through to beat Tasmanian darling Mystic Journey by a neck with a further head to another ATC Australian Oaks winner in Hungry Heart in third. That success on Colette meant that Oliver equalled Bobbie Lewis' record as the most successful Group 1-winning rider during the Melbourne Cup Carnival with 24 victories.
After a five-month break, Colette resumed racing in September 2020 at Randwick in the Tramway Stakes. Over a distance of 1400 metres, racing on the pace throughout, Colette faded late to finish 10th beaten just over two lengths. After two unplaced runs in the George Main Stakes and Epsom Handicap, Colette started at odds of $10 in the Golden Eagle raced at Rosehill Racecourse on the 31 October. Rounding the home turn she was placed 15th of 18 runners but produced a strong sprint to narrowly win the race and collect over $4 million prize money. Over an unsuitably short 1500m distance, the well-bred daughter of Hallowed Crown found a way to win and retain her undefeated record; now three-from-three on Heavy tracks. Just Thinkin’ led them around in The Golden Eagle and was still in front on the turn for home before the challenges came. On the improve was the Brad Widdup-trained Icebath, ridden by apprentice Tom Sherry, while Colette was winding-up late in a huge run. Her and Icebath went stride for stride, with Colette really digging deep to just win The Golden Eagle in a photo as Dawn Passage held for third off a wide run.
On the 13 February 2021, Colette resumed racing in the Apollo Stakes at Randwick over 1400 metres. Starting at odds of $12 she settled just behind the leaders in third position throughout the run. Upon straightening she burst past her opposition to win by a margin of 2 lengths. In the 2021 Spring Racing Carnival, Colette recorded back-to-back wins in the Tristarc Stakes and the Empire Rose Stakes where she recorded her second career Group One victory. In early 2022, Colette finished second in both the Apollo Stakes and the George Ryder Stakes. After finishing last in the Queen of the Turf Stakes, Colette was retired from racing to become a broodmare. At the time of her retirement, Colette was the highest earning racehorse that Godolphin has owned in Australia.
