CASCADIAN
The gelding with the big baldy face is often the "forgotton horse" but he's pretty decent
A homebred for Godolphin, Cascadian is the son of Epsom Derby hero New Approach and is the best of three winners out of the talented Street Cry mare Falls Of Lora, whose four wins included the Group III UAE Oaks and the Listed Coral Distaff at Sandown. Cascadian began his racing career in France under the guidance of trainer André Fabre. He raced on six occasions for three wins and two seconds, with his best result a second placing when beaten a short neck in the Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat at Deauville.
Having been gelded, Cascadian was then transferred to Godolphin's training operation in Australia to continue his career. The James Cummings stables in Sydney seemed the perfect fit and the horse first hit the turf with a trial at Warwick Farm in August 2019. His debut win in Sydney was a 3YO Handicap at Randwick, the Star Spring Mile. Cascadian proved successful in Australia when winning the 2020 Doncaster Prelude. He finally achieved Group one success when winning the Gr.1 2021 Doncaster Mile at Randwick getting the better of Icebath. Cascadian won his second Group One race when scoring in the 2022 All Aged Stakes ridden by James McDonald, defeating Tofane by a length.
In March 2023, Cascadian achieved his greatest victory in the Gr.1 Australian Cup (2000m), beating Numerian with Ben Melham aboard. His consistency is awesome at the highest level as Cascadian has placed in various elite races competing against the very best. He ran 3rd to Snapdancer and I'm Thunderstruck in the Gr.1 Memsie Stakes, won the Gr.3 Craven Plate (1800m), ran 4th behind Amelia's Jewel in the Northerly at Ascot WA, 5th in the WFA Canterbury Stakes behind Artorius and Imperatriz, 2nd behind Mr Brightside in the All Star Mile at Moonee Valley and 3rd behind Giga Kick and Zaaki in the 2023 All-Aged Stakes. Even in 2023 he was able to still foot it with the best, running fourth behind Think It Over and Fangirl in the Verry Elleegant Stakes and then a 3rd behind Pride of Jenni and Mr Brightside in the WFA All-Star Mile. Another big was still in the offering as his career continued on. As a nine-year-old his finest years may be beyond him and retirement fast closing in, however his willingness to run and all round soundness still exists.
And there he was again for back to back victories in the 2024 Gr.1 Australian Cup, up against Mr Brightside and Pride of Jenni at Flemington. Jenni took off on the turn and looked the winner at the 200m mark. But the big boy appeared a ball of muscle, super powerful and just kept grinding away to wind up and win right on the line. It was possibly his finest victory at the age of nine, taking his earnings close to $10 million in stakes.
