CAPITALIST
With only seven starts, Capitalist was retired to Stud before his real potential was ever discovered
The Thoroughbred racehorse, Capitalist, born on September 14, 2013, is a retired equine athlete and active sire. Bred and trained in Australia, Capitalist achieved notable success by winning the prestigious Golden Slipper Stakes, a Group One race. The galloper accumulated more than three million dollars in stake earnings, but only raced seven times in his career. Capitalist was acquired for $165,000 at the Magic Millions yearling sales from the Daandine Stud in Queensland in early 2015.
He is by the super sire Written Tycoon (AUS) out of Kitalpha (NZ). Capitalist had a real Golden Slipper pedigree, with Marscay, Vain and Luskin Star featuring in his first four generations, while his second dam Compulsion (Danehill (USA)-Bold Promise by Luskin Star) is a sister to 1996 Slipper winner Merlene. Compulsion was no slouch at two either, winning the Gr.3 Blue Diamond Preview when beating Piccadilly Circus (dam of Fastnet Rock) into second Capitalist lived up to his physique and pedigree from the time he stepped out on to the track. Peter and Paul Snowden trained the chestnut for a large syndicate put together by James Harron. His initial trial was conducted on September 21, 2015.
On October 3, 2015, Capitalist participated in the renowned Breeders' Plate at Randwick Racecourse, achieving a remarkable victory with a 3-length advantage over the 1000 metre distance. The horse demonstrated exceptional dominance, effortlessly surpassing its competitors. It was claimed the horse virtually ‘toyed with the opposition’. Following a brief hiatus, Capitalist made a triumphant return to secure victory in the Magic Millions Wyong, a race serving as a precursor to the Magic Millions Classic. Despite being the favorite with competitive odds, Capitalist exceeded expectations by securing a victory margin of over 2 lengths, amassing $124,000 in prize earnings.
Capitalist was again short favourite when he raced in the Magic Millions Classic for two-year-olds in January 2016. Despite some early trouble on the fence, he kicked in the straight to win easily and collect $1,205,000 prize money. Jockey Blake Shinn said, "It was tight, very tight. I thought for a second I was going up the fence, but he just held his position, that was it. That is his greatest asset – his attitude and speed."
Capitalist then had a freshen before contesting the Group 2 Todman Stakes in March. Again a short-priced favourite, he was the 2nd placed of the four horses in the race, finishing behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained Kiss And Make Up. A post-race vet examination showed the horse to be mildly sore. Capitalist's sire, Written Tycoon, had won the same race in 2005.
Capitalist next contested the Golden Slipper, the world's richest payday for two-year-olds. After the previous loss, he was paying $8, the first time in his short career that he had not started favourite. With Extreme Choice badly missing the start, Capitalist won the race by half a length over Yankee Rose. After a 147-day spell, Capitalist trialed twice before failing to place in the San Domenico Stakes on 13 August 2016. He had a freshen and another trial and then placed 3rd in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes. Capitalist was officially retired to stud at Newgate Farm in November 2016, having chipped a fetlock in training.
Since Todman won that first Golden Slipper back in 1957, Australia’s premier juvenile sprint has proved its reliability as a stallion-maker with horses like Pago Pago, Baguette, Vain, Luskin Star, Marscay, Rory’s Jester, Marauding, Canny Lad, Danzero, Flying Spur, Catbird, Stratum, Sebring, Sepoy and Pierro finding success as stallions. The 2015 winner Vancouver, 2016 winner Capitalist, 2012 winner Pierro and 2011 winner Sepoy are the only male Slipper winners currently at stud. Capitalist was described as Australia’s busiest covering sire of 2017 when he served 229 mares and includes highly successful racehorses. The first crop yearlings by this Newgate Stud-based sire made up to $750,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions where they were snapped up by a select group of buyers.
