BURGUNDY

Lightly raced, but royally bred, Burgundy was a gun speedster on the turf

Burgundy, the well-bred son of Redoute's Choice and the Group 1-winning Zabeel mare Grand Echezeaux, a three-quarter brother to Darci Brahma, retired on a winning note by claiming the $50,000 Listed Fairdale/Goodwood Studs' Flying Handicap at Awapuni on Easter Saturday 2013. Te Akau principal, David Ellis purchased Burgundy as a yearling for $1.3m at the 2010 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale, from the draft of Pencarrow Stud. During his 12 race day appearances, Burgundy achieved a remarkable track record of seven victories, five of which were at the esteemed Group and Listed levels. At that price he was always destined for the stud Farm at a very early age, so was very lightly raced.

Notably, there was only one instance where he failed to complete a race, which occurred after the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas, when he was diagnosed with a medical condition known as thumps. The three-year-old colt, expertly trained by Jason Bridgman, demonstrated exceptional prowess on the racetrack, securing three consecutive victories. Notably, he achieved a significant milestone by claiming the prestigious Listed Canterbury Stakes (1600m) in October 2011, marking his third triumph.

In December, Burgundy achieved third place in the Gr.2 Great Northern Guineas, followed by a third-place finish in the Gr.3 Trentham Stakes in January. In March, he successfully secured a triumph in the Listed Mr Tiz Trophy held at Ellerslie. Subsequently, in April, he achieved another victory in the $70,000 Gr.3 Windsor Park Stud Cambridge Breeders Stakes, which was a 1200-metre race. Fresh up as a 4YO he won the Listed Levin Stakes at Otaki in November 2012. After finishing third in the Group 1 Telegraph Hcp in January 2013, he claimed his fifth stakes' victory in March of that year, the Listed Fairdale/Goodwood Studs' Flying Hcp over 1400m. He won 7 of his 12 starts for stakes of $214,125 and was retired to stud in April 2013.

Sire of 2019 Listed Welcome Stakes winner, La Romanee and 2018 NZB Filly of the Year, Dijon Bleu, one of his most notable progeny was, Belle En Rouge, who went on to win the Gr.1 NZ Oaks, and was the joint reigning NZB Filly of the Year. She also won the Gr.2 Eight Carat Classic, Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes and Gr.3 Anniversary Handicap. She was runner up in the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile, and finished third in both the Gr.1 NZ 1000 Guineas and Gr.3 Soliloquy Stakes. Burgundy Rose was one of the most consistent mares in commission. She won eight of her 34 starts, was placed a further 20 times, including nine runner up placings. Burgundy passed away in 2019.
