BAGUETTE

Baguette was a stunning sprinter in the early 1970s, ruling the dance floor as a 2yo

Baguette was an Australian bred thoroughbred that was undefeated as a two-year-old and became the first winner of the Two Year Old Triple Crown. The horse achieved 14 Principal Race victories during his racing career. He was a beautifully slick juvenile sprinter with a high crusing speed and the ability to change up gears swiftly. Unfortunately he is forgotton as a star of the early 1970's, with the likes of Taj Rossi, Manikato, Lelani and Surround more prominent stars of the era that stole the limelight. In retirement, he transitioned into a successful breeding stallion. Baguette was by the winner and good sire, Rego (IRE), his dam was the broodmare, Dark Jewel by the outstanding sire, Star Kingdom (IRE). Dark Jewel produced 10 named foals for five stakes winners including Baguette’s full sisters, Birthright and Heirloom. Baguette was a half-brother to the stakes winners, Betelgeuse by (Wilkes FR) and Cabochon (by Edmundo). Dark Jewel’s progeny won over sixty-eight races for A$428,547 in prize-money in Australia and Malaysia. Baguette was trained by Fil Allotta at Randwick.

A brilliant performer, Baguette won all of his seven starts in his two-year-old season and only once finished worse than third in his first 23 races when unplaced in the VATC Futurity Stakes. His win in the 1970 Golden Slipper was outstanding, powering away over the final 200m in front of a massive crowd. He was undefeated as a two year old winning races like the Silver Slipper, Golden Slipper, Maribyrnong Plate, AJC SIres Produces Stakes and Champagne Stakes, and in doing so became the first two year old to win the "Triple Crown". As a three-year-old he won the Hobartville Stakes, Railway Quality Handicap, Newmarket Handicap, Doomben Booroolong Handicap and Doomben 10,000. As a four year old he won the Canterbury Stakes, Rosehill Stakes and George Main Stakes.

In 1972 Baguette was syndicated as a stallion into a total of forty-five shares at $7,300 which was then an Australian record of $328,500 for a stallion. He stood at the famous Kia Ora Stud at Scone in New South Wales alongside Gunsynd. Baguette's progeny included 18 stakes-winners which had 35 stakes wins between them. They included, Crown Jester, Dark Eclipse, Fiancee, Hit It Benny, I Like Diamonds, Lady Manina and Romantic Dream. Baguette’s daughters produced the good racehorses, Clan O’Sullivan, Diamond Shower, Paris Opera, Vain Karioi. Baguette died at the stud in January 1984 after suffering a massive haemorrhage.
