ALIZEE

A high class three-year-old, Alizee was a well bred filly that had a stunning turn of foot

As well as being a superior racehorse, Alizee is a member of one of the finest families in the Australian studbook. Her half-brother Astern (Medaglia D’Oro), was a Group one winner and is now a Darley stallion. Her dam Essaouira and granddam Alizes (Rory's Jester) were outstanding racehorses and her third dam, the G1 winner La Baraka is a daughter of the champion race mare and producer, Triscay, a winner of 15 races, five of them at G1. Her sire Sepoy was the champion Australian sprinter of his era and has produced seven Stakes winners, the best of them after Alizee being the British-bred German Group 2 winner Unforgetable, Godolphin's prized mare, Essaouira (Exceed and Excel), with three black-type offspring set a new standard. Essaouira's progeny included a Group 1 winning son already at stud (Astern), a dual-Group 1 winning daughter (Alizee), a stakes placed gelding (Mogador), and Tassort.

Alizee was a top-class filly from 1200-1600m when at her best, although it took a while to get off the mark, but she stepped up her game when landing the Gr.2 Tea Rose Stakes. The Godolphin star Alizee then went on to establish herself as the dominant filly of her age in Australia with a stunning last-to-first victory in the Gr.1 Flight Stakes at Randwick in 2017. As well as being her initial G1 win, it was the first for her sire Sepoy and the first for her trainer James Cummings since he joined Godolphin. The following year Alizee won the Gr.2 Light Fingers Stakes on return, further enhancing herself as one of Australia’s best three-year-old fillies of that spring. Given a perfect ride by Glyn Schofield, Alizee raced handily in fourth place until the 300m when she took a run between horses and soon assumed control. She then knuckled down and fought off the runner up Shumookh to win by a head.

Alizee confirmed that status with a win that required her to dig deep before asserting herself in collecting the Gr.1 Coolmore Legacy Stakes at Randwick later that spring; won Listed Christmas Classic at Randwick following a break, and then added the Gr.2 Expressway Stakes at Rosehill on first start of 2019 followed by the Gr.1 Yulong Futurity Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield in February, picking up four races in succession and defeating nine individual Group one winners.

Alizee was back to winning her ways when landing the Gr.2 Missile Stakes at Rosehill in August 2019. In a slowly-run race, Alizee settled at the tail of the small field, with jockey Hugh Bowman showing typical confidence and race sense by putting her well into contention at the halfway point of the 1200m race. The pair joined the lead within a dozen strides and took control soon after, passing the 200m with a three-length break over Invincible Gem, at which point Bowman allowed her to cruise to the post under her own steam.

Alizee ran okay after in big races later in her career, starting in 2020 by finishing second of ten in the Gr.2 Expressway Stakes over 1200m at Randwick in February and went one better in Gr.2 at Apollo Stakes at the same venue over 1400m later that same month. Below her best when next seen, then held in the George Ryder at Rosehill and the Coolmore Legacy Stakes at Randwick. Alizee bowed out of racing, running 10th in Gr.1 Queen of the Turf Stakes, soon retiring to the paddocks.
