ALAMOSA

A sharp NZ colt, Alamosa would be lethal at home and take out the Toorak in Australia

Alamosa, a distinguished Kiwi racehorse, achieved marvelous success on the racetrack, securing four prestigious Group 1 victories, including the renowned Toorak Handicap at Caulfield. Alomosa achieved the esteemed title of Champion New Zealand 3-year-old and secured Group One victories at various stages of his career, spanning two, three, and four years of age. Notably, the colt demonstrated his prowess by clinching Group One triumphs under both handicap and WFA conditions, further solidifying his exceptional abilities. Additionally, his accomplishments extended across international borders, having secured Group 1 victories in both New Zealand and Australia. By champion sire O'Reilly out of Lodore Mystic, the career of Alomosa started in August 2006 at a small provincial North Island track. Trained at Matamata by Peter McKay his NZ formline would read as impressive: 21120413112215111. As a 2yo Alomosa won a couple of jumpout trials before winning on debut at Wanganui over 800m. He followed up with another victory at a Premier Hastings meeting attacking the same distance.

Returning to the Hawkes Bay in October, Alomosa won the Listed Wellesley Stakes (1000m), bounding away at the 150m mark with Opie Bosson in the saddle. After that comfortable 2L win the team travelled to Riccarton for the Listed Ford Welcome Stakes (1000m) less then a month later. However Alomosa would have to settle for 2nd to Nosmo King after a tardy start. After a spell the colt resumed in February at Te Rapa and Matamata, but struggled to find that dash of speed in the Listed events.

The good looking colt would turn that around in March when victorious in the Gr.1 Diamond Stakes at Ellerslie (1200m), bursting through the inner for an easy win. With Gavin McLeod now the preferred rider, Alomosa put in another big finish in the Gr.1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) but failed to pick up the winner, Nightlign, finishing 3rd.

Resuming in September as a three-year-old, Alomosa would thrive over 1300m, firstly when winning at Taupo when defeating Antipodean, then proving victorious in the Gr.2 Hawkes Bay Guineas over 1400m. A 2nd would follow in the Gr.2 Wellington Breeders Guineas before finishing runner-up to The Pooka in the Gr.1 NZ 2000 Guineas over the mile at Riccarton. Returning North Alomosa took out the Gr.2 Avondale Guineas in December before taking on the older horses in the Gr.1 Zabeel Classic on Boxing Day, won by Sir Slick over Xcellent. Alomosa would show his real class almost a month later at the Wellington Cup Carnival, firstly winning the Gr.1 Wellington Stakes before taking out the prestigious Gr.1 Thorndon Mile on the Trentham turf. Alomosa would then win the WFA Gr.1 Otaki-Maori Stakes beating home Sir Slick, finishing out a sublime campaign.

In August, Alomosa relocated across the Tasman Sea to join the Mick Price Stables and compete against formidable opponents. The horse demonstrated his capabilities by securing two solid fourth-place finishes in the Liston Stakes behind Light Fingers and Weekend Hussler in the Memsie at Caulfield. Subsequently, Alomosa achieved a sixth-place finish in the Feehan at Moonee Valley. Alomosa achieved his most notable accomplishment in October at Caulfield, where the four-year-old secured victory in the prestigious Gr.1 Toorak Handicap, a 1600-metre race, besting his competitor, Rockwood.. A 7th in the Cox Plate would be followed by a close 2nd behind Maldivian in the C.F ORR and a 3rd in the Futurity Stakes. Two poor results in the George Ryder Stakes and the Doncaster would see Alomosa round out his Aussie sojourn and return home and retire to stud.

At stud, Alomosa firmly established himself as one of the leading sires standing in New Zealand, with over 190 winners at a ratio of 60% winners to runners (as at the end of 2018/19). The multiple Group One-winning son of O’Reilly has been represented by three new stakes winners this season in On The Rocks, Beefeater and Aspen Lass, while the multiple stakes winner Stolen Dance achieved a well-deserved Group One win in the Thorndon Mile (1600m) before being retired to stud.

Already the sire of a classic winner in 2013 Gr.1 VRC Oaks (2500m) winner Kirramosa, Alamosa’s progeny earned $1.1 million in prizemoney in NZ during the 2017/18 season.
